One of the nicest parts of any holiday is discovering new places to eat, from a simple village café or a fresh fish lunch by the coast to a special dinner somewhere with a view.
The Algarve has a wonderful food culture, shaped by the sea, the countryside and many local ingredients. Fish and seafood are a big part of everyday eating here, but so are figs, almonds, oranges, carob, olives, local cheeses, honey and herbs. You will see these ingredients appearing again and again in traditional dishes, desserts, markets and small local shops.
Everyone knows the famous pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart), but the Algarve has its own regional sweets that are well worth trying. Look out for cakes and desserts made with fig, almond and carob, such as bolo de figo (fig cake), queijo de figo (fig and almond sweet), tarte de alfarroba (carob tart), Dom Rodrigo (traditional Algarve egg and almond sweet) or tarte de três delícias (three delights tart), which often combines fig, almond and carob. These are very typical of the region and are lovely with a coffee, a glass of port, or a small glass of medronho.
Carob is called alfarroba in Portuguese, and there is actually a carob tree in the back garden at Casa da Fonte. The long dark pods can look a little like rubbery beans, but once dried and processed they are used to make carob flour, cakes, biscuits, tarts, spreads, syrups, liqueurs and chocolate-style products. The seeds are also used to make carob bean gum, which is used in some food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Around the Covid years, demand and supply problems pushed prices up sharply, with some reports saying carob prices increased by as much as 800% at one point. Because of this, carob was sometimes described locally as “dark gold”.
Medronho is another very Algarvian thing to try. It is a traditional local spirit made from the fruit of the strawberry tree. It is strong, but very Portuguese, and is usually enjoyed slowly after a meal.
If you visit in late winter or early spring, the almond trees are also beautiful when they are in flower. The blossom is usually white and soft pink, and in some inland areas the hills can look almost covered in flowers. It is one of the prettiest times of year in the Algarve.
For seafood, one of the classic Algarve dishes is cataplana. This is both the name of the copper clam-shaped cooking pot and the dish cooked inside it. It is usually made with fish, clams, prawns, tomato, garlic, herbs and white wine, and is often served for two people to share.
You will also see many marisqueiras (seafood restaurants). A marisqueira is a seafood restaurant, often specialising in shellfish such as prawns, clams, crab, oysters, mussels and lobster. These are a great choice if you enjoy seafood, and the best ones are often simple, busy and very local. Good things to look for on menus include amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (clams with garlic, olive oil and coriander), conquilhas (small clams), camarão (prawns), sapateira recheada (stuffed crab), percebes (goose barnacles) and grilled prawns.
Fresh fish is also a big part of eating in the Algarve. Many restaurants will show you the fish of the day, which may include dourada (sea bream), robalo (sea bass), sardinhas (sardines), atum (tuna), peixe-espada (swordfish) or polvo (octopus). A simple grilled fish with salad, potatoes and a glass of chilled white wine is often one of the best meals you can have here.
Another classic Portuguese dish to try is bacalhau à Brás (salt cod with finely chopped fried potatoes, onion and egg). Bacalhau (salt cod) is loved all over Portugal, and this is one of the most popular and easy-to-enjoy versions.
If you are having a BBQ at the villa, chouriço (Portuguese smoked sausage) is a very Portuguese thing to try. You can buy it easily in most supermarkets, and it is lovely cooked over flames or on the grill as a starter with fresh bread, olives and cheese. You could also try local cheeses, presunto (cured ham), tomatoes, sardines, piri-piri chicken or pork on the BBQ.
For drinks, Portuguese wine is usually very good value. A crisp white or vinho verde (young, light Portuguese wine) is lovely with fish and seafood, while a red from the Alentejo or Douro works well with meat. Port is usually enjoyed after dinner, often with cheese or dessert rather than with the main meal. For something more local, try medronho after dinner, or a chilled beer such as Sagres or Super Bock with lunch.
Opening times can vary, especially outside the main summer season, and some restaurants close one or two days a week. For popular restaurants, weekends and summer evenings, it is always worth booking ahead. Lunch is usually best from around 12:00–14:30 and dinner from around 19:00 onwards. Many smaller places are relaxed and traditional, so do not be surprised if the best meals are in the simplest-looking restaurants.

Please note: the carob pods from the tree should not be eaten directly from the tree. Carob needs to be properly dried and processed before it is used in food products.

La Piazza - an Italian restaurant in Santa Barbara de Nexe (10 mins by car) is really good but can be quite a wait for food, if busy, as all made fresh.

There is also a more traditional restaurant 10 minutes down the road by car called Flor da Ameixa. It's a very simple restaurant, but the food is normally very nice and prices are reasonable. If you go early or ask for the next day you can ask the lady to make you an Algarve Cataplana to have at the villa. A fish dish made in a copper Cataplana, see image here in this link:

You can of course eat in, but sometimes you might want to stay, enjoy the villa and not cook.
For beautiful beach walks and spectacular restaurants, you have Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago areas. They are about 15/20 mins by car. Very affluent areas but well worth a visit even if it’s just for a drink. From Quinta do Lago you can walk all the way to Praia de Faro (Faro beach). On arrival there's a Snack bar called O Rui, which also has lovely cooked food.
