Across the Algarve, guests will find many different types of markets, including farmers’ markets, fish markets, gypsy markets, flea markets, antique fairs, craft markets, monthly village markets and summer night markets.

Some of the Algarve’s best shopping towns, from traditional markets and historic streets to local crafts, ceramics, cork goods, gifts, boutiques and relaxed cafés. These are some of our favourite places to explore.

Loulé

15 minutes by car

Loulé is one of the best traditional shopping towns in the Algarve and one of our top recommendations. Start at the Mercado Municipal, then walk through the historic centre and Rua 5 de Outubro, a traditional shopping street with clothes shops, decoration stores, boutiques, crafts and cafés. It is excellent for ceramics, cork goods, baskets, Portuguese shoes, gifts and local food.

Saturday is the best day to visit, as you can enjoy the indoor municipal market, the outdoor farmers’ market in the surrounding streets, and the larger weekly market nearby.

Faro

15 minutes by car

Faro is a good choice for a mix of sightseeing, relaxed shopping and a more historic atmosphere. Start around the marina and then wander into the Old Town, with its cobbled streets, city walls, cathedral area, cafés, small shops and places to pick up gifts or local products. Forum Algarve is also useful if you want big-name stores, a supermarket and easy parking, while Faro Municipal Market is good for fresh produce and local food.

Olhão

20 minutes by car

Olhão is one of the best places for seafood shopping. The market has two famous red-brick halls by the waterfront: one for fish and seafood, and the other for fruit, vegetables and other produce. Saturday morning is the liveliest time, with outdoor farmers’ and artisan stalls. The surrounding old streets are also good for ceramics, cork, lace, azulejos and small local shops.

Tavira

30 minutes by car

Tavira is ideal for a relaxed shopping walk with a beautiful historic setting. Browse the centre around Praça da República, Rua da Liberdade, the riverfront lanes and the municipal market. For a more modern shopping option, Tavira Plaza has shops, restaurants, a supermarket and a cinema.

Lagos

60 minutes by car

Lagos is good for independent shops, gifts, ceramics, beachwear and local produce. The main browsing area is the old town around Rua 25 de Abril and the nearby streets. Visit Mercado Municipal de Lagos early for fish, produce, wine, local goods and a genuine local atmosphere.

São Brás de Alportel

10 minutes by car

São Brás de Alportel is a lovely option for a quieter, more traditional Algarve feel. It is known for its connection with cork and local crafts, and is a pleasant place to browse small shops, cafés, local products and traditional streets without the busier resort atmosphere.

Silves

40 minutes by car

Silves is a beautiful historic town and a good choice if you want a slower shopping stroll with plenty of Algarve character. The area around the castle, historic centre and small streets is good for gifts, ceramics, cork goods, local products and cafés. It is also a nice place to combine shopping with sightseeing.

Vilamoura

20 minutes by car

Vilamoura is less traditional, but it is lovely for evening shopping and a stroll around the marina. It is best for resort boutiques, beachwear, souvenirs, jewellery, cafés and restaurants. For a serious shopping day, MAR Shopping Algarve or Forum Algarve are better options, but Vilamoura is a pleasant place to visit after dinner.

Local Products & Souvenirs from the Algarve

Good Algarve gifts include ceramics, cork bags and accessories, hand-painted tiles, basketware, linen, Portuguese soaps, olive oil, sea salt, fig and almond sweets, honey, carob products, local wine, piri-piri, tinned sardines, cataplana pans, and beachwear. For food gifts, supermarkets such as Apolónia, Continente, and Pingo Doce are easy; for more character, buy from Loulé, Olhão, Tavira, or Lagos markets.

Practical Tips 

Go to food markets early, especially for fish and seafood. Most municipal markets are morning markets and are quieter by lunchtime. Bring cash for smaller stalls, although supermarkets and most shops take cards. For parking, MAR Shopping, Forum Algarve, AlgarveShopping, Aqua Portimão and Tavira Plaza are easiest. For markets, aim to arrive before 10:00 in summer to avoid heat and crowds. Always check holiday opening hours, as Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Easter and local holidays can change schedules.

Handmade Pottery and Ceramics
 

Porches Pottery / Olaria de Porches — Porches

One of the best places to buy traditional Algarve pottery. They have been making hand-painted ceramics and tiles since 1968, and visitors can see artists painting the ceramics on site. There is also a café and garden, so it works well as a relaxed stop for shopping and lunch.

Olaria Pequena — near Porches

A smaller studio and shop selling handmade pottery, tiles and prints. This is a good choice for guests who want something more personal and artisan rather than a large souvenir shop

Wine Tasting and Buying Local Wines

For guests who want to taste before buying, there are two good options. A garrafeira is a specialist wine shop with a large selection of Portuguese wines, where staff can recommend bottles and some offer tastings.

Garrafeira Soares in Vale do Lobo is a good option, with daily wine tastings and a wide selection. Apolónia Wineshop in Almancil, Galé/Albufeira and Lagoa is also good for browsing and buying quality Portuguese and Algarve wines.

For a more scenic experience, book a tasting at a local vineyard such as Morgado do Quintão, Quinta dos Santos or Quinta dos Vales, where guests can taste the estate’s wines and buy bottles directly from the producer.
